TRANSFER FOR VESUVIO
Transfer to Vesuvius (a dormant volcano).
The volcano is best known for the 79 AD eruption. which buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and many other settlements.
The eruption spewed a cloud of stone, ash and smoke 33 kilometers into the air, spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second. It ultimately released 100,000 times the heat energy of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. An estimated 16,000 people died from hydrothermal pyroclastic flows.
The only surviving eyewitness account of the event consists of the letters of Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus.
