Just a few kilometres from Pompeii, in the neighbourhood of Oplontis there is a pleasant oasis for lovers of our cultural heritage: the National Antiquarium “Man and environment in the Vesuvian territory” with the annexed archaeological area of Villa Regina.
The ancient seaside city of Oplontis (nowadays known as Torre Annunziata) is famous for the Roman Villa of Poppaea. It is located on a cliff twelve metres above the Mediterranean shoreline and was rumoured to belong to Roman emperor Nero’s second wife, Poppaea Sabina. The villa was destroyed in an earthquake in 62 CE, and reconstruction work was still in progress during the eruption of Vesuvius. With its several rooms (about 100 rooms have been excavated so far) picturesque frescoes, and large gardens, Villa Poppaea is one of the most luxurious villas ever found in the Roman age. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997 along with Pompeii and Herculaneum.
It is an extraordinary documentation of how it was characterised the suburban area of Pompeii, where there were several farms and villas and a vibrant ecosystem with flora and fauna now lost. In Oplontis, you can visit Villa Regina, an example of a rustic villa used for wine production. Associated with the visit of Oplontis, you can take the chance to also visit the Antiquarium of Boscoreale that is a rustic country villa dating to the 1st century BCE and a fascinating antiquarium showcasing artefacts from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the surrounding region.
Many archaeological excavations were carried out at Boscoreale between the late 19th century and early 20th century by private individuals, usually the landowners. Thanks to these excavations, about 30 farmhouses were located, providing a picture of the dense network of farmsteads operating on the lower slopes of Mount Vesuvius.
The excavations at Boscoreale produced several artefacts that were removed and sent to various museums around the world (such as the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Louvre Museum in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York).
